Area and Climate
Southern Illinois University Edwardsville (SIUE) is located in southwestern Illinois in the town of Edwardsville, which has a population of 21,500. Because SIUE’s 2,660-acre (1,077-hectare) campus is located just a half-hour drive from St. Louis, students have the opportunity to experience the benefits of a culturally diverse, major American city while living and studying in a friendly, small-town university community. SIUE students experience four distinct seasons, with winter temperatures averaging 32 degrees F (O degrees C) and summer temperatures averaging 80 degrees F (27 degrees C).
Education
Established in 1957, SIUE is part of a modern, comprehensive, multicampus university and provides undergraduate programs and graduate/professional programs. SIUE’s seven academic units include Arts and Sciences, Business, Dental Medicine, Education, Engineering (including computer science), Nursing and Pharmacy. The school’s new Engineering Building houses state-of-the-art testing facilities. The Career Development Center Cooperative Education Program allows students to work for a U.S. business in a job related to their academic program. SIUE's programs, faculty, location, and affordability make it an outstanding choice for a successful academic career.
Campus Life
The SIUE campus provides a wealth of social, recreational, and educational opportunities that enhance and broaden the University experience. SIUE offers a state-of-the-art Student Fitness Center, a beautiful campus lake and swimming pool, bike trails, theatrical productions in the on-campus theater, modern computer labs, and more than 140 student organizations. SIUE’s lakeside apartment complex includes computer labs, athletic courts, and a small grocery store and restaurant. Although the on-campus apartments are within walking distance of the academic buildings, year-around bus service is available to the central campus as well as to surrounding communities.
For International Students
Ongoing assistance and support are provided by the Office of International Student Services (ISS), which makes every effort to ensure that each international student’s experience at SIUE is enjoyable and productive. Services provided by ISS include assistance with U.S. immigration regulations and procedures, work eligibility clearance, and visa information. International Student Orientation, held the week prior to the start of classes, provides various programs, workshops, and tours designed to ease the adjustment into a new environment. The International Hospitality Program, a community volunteer organization, provides additional support and the opportunity to interact with local families.
